What is the difference between watercolor pencils and Inktense pencils?

Put side by side, the obvious difference is that Watercolour pencils have a hexagonal barrel. This gives a good grip for more detailed, subtle work such as architectural or botanical subjects. On the other hand, Inktense pencils have a rounded barrel allowing for more broad, expressive strokes covering large surfaces.

Wood lasts just as long if you use colored pencils on it. Just make sure to use the best, most lightfast pencils you have, though.

Can you use watercolor pencils on wood?

To start using watercolor pencils on wood, add some color lines, separate or overlapping. Make sure your wood is smoothly sanded. For very dense woods, like hard maple, you can apply the pencil directly to the raw wood. Softer woods, like poplar, will grab the color and absorb more of it into the pores.

Can you use Inktense pencils to draw on fabric?

This vibrant range of water soluble ink can be used to draw, and as an ink wash on paper or fabric. If you’d like to know how to draw on fabric, Derwent shows you how with Inktense pencils. Do you want to quickly search and sort these blocks by name, number and lightfast rating – and see their colour swatches?

Can a Derwent Inktense pencil dissolve in water?

Derwent created the Derwent Inktense Outliner as a resist pencil that absolutely will not dissolve if you put water on it. The mark you make will stay there unless it’s erased. It’s a waterproof graphite pencil. It’s not ink black for hard stained-glass looking outlines, which would be nice and I wish they’d do that as a variation on it.

Why do you use Inktense blocks for art?

The color is permanent when dry, allowing you to create long-lasting and vibrant works of art. Plus, when the pigments are washed out, they are designed to dry quickly, which helps minimize color bleeding. Layer or place contrasting colors next to each other without the fear of color bleeding.

What kind of paper to use with Derwent Inktense?

Unless you’re using great gobs of water though, the 90lb (120gsm) student watercolor paper or All-Media sketchbooks paper is fine, and Inktense usually don’t need loose washes to come out well unless you’re scrubbing hard to make a loose wash background the way I did on this Amaryllis.
