A Pulser coil is used for Generation of pulse (spark) to initiate the ignition of a vehicle. The Pulser Coil, (often called Pickup Coil, or Timing Coil) is responsible for providing the timing signal to the ignition control box on modern motorcycles with solid-state ignition systems.
How does a pulsar coil work?
The purpose of the Pulser coil is to give ignition signals to the engine and ignition system. The resistance categorizes pulser coils. They are pulse generators that work when the engine is ignited. If the AC current generated is zero, then the coil is not working.
What does the pickup coil do?
The pickup coil monitors the rotation of the distributor and triggers the ignition system at the optimal moment to produce the best timed spark for best engine performance.
How do you check a pickup coil?
Connect the red (positive) lead of the multimeter to the outer, positive terminal of the ignition coil. Turn the reading dial on the multimeter to ohms to measure resistance of the primary pickup coil. (The Greek letter omega denotes ohms.)
How do you check an exciter coil?
To test the exciter coil you measure Ohms between that ground screw and the Red/Black wire, you should get something in a broad range of the neighborhood of 500 ohms, check your shop manual for exact value.
What happens when pick up coil goes bad?
A pickup coil that has failed, or is about to, may also cause engine stalling and an inability to accelerate smoothly because the fuel injectors are not firing properly. Engine stalling will occur as the vehicle warms up with rough idling being the first clue that a stall is about to happen.

Your CDI has two plugs, a 4-pin and a 2-pin. The 4-pin side may have 3 or 4 wires connected to it (both AC and DC versions). If the 2-pin connector has only 1 wire going to it, it’s a DC CDI. If there are 2 wires attached to the 2-pin connector, then it’s an AC CDI.
