Do you need a skimmer in a nano tank?

Since nano reef aquariums have a small volume of water, and contain such sensitive organisms, you need a powerful skimmer — or alternate filtration systems — to provide pristine water. With many marine aquariums in general, and nano setups in particular, the aquarium uses a piece of equipment called a sump.

What does a surface skimmer do in an aquarium?

The surface skimmer provides a permanently clean water surface, reducing oily film residue and therefore contributing to a reduction of microorganisms, better oxygen exchange and greater light penetration. It skims off the film residue and constantly brings new layers of water to the surface.

Is a protein skimmer worth it?

While protein Skimmer can help enormously in keeping a clean tank, they are usually not necessary for beginners who plan to keep easy fish and corals. If you want to run a pristine tank with LPS and SPS corals, a good protein Skimmer is a great investment and will help you enormously in the long run.

Do you really need a skimmer?

A skimmer is never necessary, just has lots of benefits. Very light stocking, a refugium, and a good water change schedule can easily replace a protein skimmer. However, they will be a piece of equipment I would personally use in every reef tank above 30 gallons because it is so helpful.

What is the difference between a surface skimmer and a protein skimmer?

A surface skimmer removes floating foods andoily floating waste. A protein skimmer removes dissolved organics throughout the tank via diffused aeration, not just the uneaten food or oily film on the surface.

Is a surface skimmer necessary?

A surface skimmer ( JBL TopClean II ) is a really useful addition to any external filter, as it keeps the water surface clean and ensures the water above the surface is ideally enriched with oxygen. But this also means that the surface water is not drawn into the filter circulation.

Should I run my skimmer 24 7?

Steve Taggart, inTank: In an all-in-one or smaller reef aquarium the protein skimmer should be left on 24/7. Some foods and additives “require” the skimmer to be turned off. For this I turn my return pump off for 15-30 minutes rather than the skimmer. This allows the skimmer to always running efficiently and correctly.
